We all want our kids to thrive in school. Fortunately, that can also mean supporting their creative pursuits. Studies show that art in education improves test scores and measurable intelligence, including math skills. Both subjects can be creative and analytical and ultimately inspire growing imaginations.
The Connection
Mathematical reasoning has been tied to visual imagination and creative reflection, which are involved in the creation of art. At the same time, artists and mathematicians are generally inspired by geometry as they work with shapes, symmetry, proportion and measurement.
Linking to the Past To Impact Their Future
What we know about the connection between art and math is nothing new. Dating back to 500 BC, the Greek sculptor Polykleitos used real human body proportions in his work by following a 1:√2 ratio. More artists followed in his footsteps to use math as a guiding tool in their masterpieces, resulting in Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” and Gustave Caillebotte’s “Paris Street.” Da Vinci opted to use the golden ratio while constructing facial and body proportions, while Caillebotte took advantage of linear perspective. These takeaways from math were essential to create artistic appeal.
Polykleitos, Da Vinci, and Caillebotte all went on to have successful careers. They prove that there are future career options in art and math. Namely, accountants, aerodynamics specialists, mathematicians, computer programmers, demographers, economists, loan officers and researchers all combine the best of both worlds.
